Rhode Island DUI Deaths Hit All-Time Low

July 17, 2015 by Susan T. Perkins

After being flagged last year for lenient DUI laws by Mother’s Against Drunk Driving, Rhode Island DUI enforcement has cracked down on drunk drivers – and it’s paying off.

Rhode Island DUI deaths have dropped from 65 in 2013 to 52 in 2014. While that number may still seem high to the monthly average of 45, it’s down considerably from Rhode Island’s record of 104 in 2003.

There are a number of reasons for the drop in Rhode Island DUI deaths. Some of the most notable reasons attributed are:

  • Increased seat-belt use
  • Increased citations for violation of seat-belt laws
  • Student DUI education programs
  • DUI target enforcement
  • Frequent public messaging on Rhode Island DUI arrests
  • Increased texting laws

While Rhode Island DUI deaths have often involved young drivers aged 16-24 in the past, that number has plummeted from 22 in 2009 to a nationwide low of 8 in 2014.

Rhode Island DUI Laws still have a long road ahead of them. Until DUI accidents are no longer an issue, Rhode Island DUI attorneys will still be in demand. If you’ve been suspected of a DUI in Rhode Island, call Rhode Island DUI attorney Susan T. Perkins at 401-PERKINS for your free consultation.
